We work together to continually develop and implement sustainable solutions. Through Green Thread, our environmental sustainability platform, we bring innovative and efficient solutions to life. We are passionately focused on reducing the environmental impact within our operations.
Here are just a few ways we work to make our campus more environmentally conscious:
Local Purchasing
Did you know Dining Services sources food from many local farmers, growers and distributors? The list changes throughout the year depending on seasonality and availability. However, here is a sampling of a few of our partners:
- Island Farms – Victoria, Dairy Products, Milk and Cream
- Little Qualicum Cheese – Qualicum BC, Cheese
- Island Farmhouse Poultry – Cowichan Bay, Chicken
- Centennial Meat packers – Vancouver, Halal Chicken and Some Beef
- Oughtred Coffee – Nanaimo BC, Specialty Coffee and Teas
Recycling
Dining Services partners with campus to recycle from all dining locations across campus. We are committed to minimizing our environmental footprint. Look for signs in our locations for information on where to put your recyclables.
Trayless Dining
Did you know Dining Services has been trayless since 2010? By dining trayless, you have helped positively impact the waste stream. Dining trayless minimizes food waste, conserves energy and water, and reduces the amount of cleaning chemicals entering the waste stream.
Green Paper Products
We are using 100% recycled content compostable EcoLogo certified napkin & paper towel products across campus with “one-at-a-time” dispensers helping to reduce waste and save trees,energy and water!
Fryer Oil Recycling
One hundred percent of dining services used fryer oil is recycled.
Reduced & Greener Packaging
Where disposables are required we aim to source products that are recyclable, compostable and/or made from recycled and renewable content.
Green Cleaning
Implementation of daily green cleaning program using environmentally preferable and Green Seal certified products. These products do not contain phosphorus, are formulated with environmentally responsible ingredients, and do not contain persistent, bioaccumulative or highly toxic substances. Packaging is also source reduced, recyclable or contains up to 25% post consumer content!
Greener Operations
We source Energy Starcertified equipment where it exists for all new purchases helping to conserve energy and water. Our staff are also engaged and we are excited to be rolling out Sustainability, Energy & Water Conservation and Waste Management training sessions throughout the year!
